How to Monitor Laptop Temperature

So you're sitting on your couch or in bed and realize that your lap is burning up. You pick up your laptop and it feels like a hot plate! Or maybe you left on top of the TV or on your couch and they are really hot too. You start to think maybe you should figure out how to find the temperature of your notebook and how to keep it from over heating. Most people, however, spend a couple minutes thinking about and then do nothing about the potential problem.

Well, this is because it is not a super simple process and sometimes a novice computer user will find it impossible to find the right place to check the laptops temperature settings and readings.

A growing number of laptops include temperature sensors that are built in and which are somewhat easy to find. But the truth is that most notebooks have a temperature sensor and use the processor temperature to control the fan. And as even novices know, when you run the fan on high, that uses battery power. Therefore, they often only turn the fans higher when the temperature is very hot. But most people don't know this and it is not obvious.

You can spend try fooling around in the control panel on a Windows laptop. But that is often simply a lost cause. You could try checking in the BIOS (and if you don't know what that is don't worry and forget it). There could be a small screen that will tell you the temp. However, you'll have to reboot to do this and who wants to do that just to see them temperature of your computer?

So, the easiest solution is to just do all you can to make sure that the vents on the bottom of your laptop are free to do their job. Most laptops are built so they sit just a bit above the surface they are on to allow for airflow which prevents over heating.

So, if your notebook is sitting on soft surface, the vents may get blocked and the computer will heat up. Duh. So, rather than worry about monitoring the temp, if you are a novice user, just make sure to keep your laptop in a position to keep cool and turn it off every once in a while to cool down.

Another alternative is to use laptop cooling pads which are specialized accessories that keep the laptop cool. Shop cheap laptop cooling pads.
