The Acer Aspire S3 is a good budget ultrabook which is advertized as being the best one to go for if you want a slim laptop under $900, but how good it is in practice? In terms of design and build, the Acer S3 looks a lot like the MacBook Air but also has some innovative details. The lid is made out of plastic with a thin aluminum cover, so you will probably not get the same level of protection on this laptop as you would with full aluminum body ultrabooks. Nevertheless, the S3 manages to still be thin, measuring only 0.51 inches at its thinnest side and 0.69 inches at its thickest side and weighing in 2.98 pounds.

The screen of the S3 is a 13.3 inch 1366 x 768 pixel panel has a good luminosity and great viewing angles. On the other hand, the keyboard and touchpad are not great and feel a little cheap on the whole. While typing you may have some problems until you get used to the keyboard, so I suggest giving it a test-run before acquiring this laptop. On the other hand, the touchpad is good and responsive.
Performance-wise, you will get an Intel Core i5 CPU running at 1.6GHz, 4GB of RAM and Intel HD 3000 graphics. Overall, the CPU gives you good performance in both everyday tasks and more complex applications, but the Intel HD graphics is not great if you want to buy this device for gaming. Storage space is hybrid on the Acer Aspire S3 with a 20GB SSD for the OS and 320GB HDD for storing your data.

Battery life on the Acer S3 is decent, but not great. You will get 3:30 hours to 4 hours of runtime on battery until the device dies, so if you plan to get an ultrabook for long trips I would go for a gadget that manages to pull off 7+ hours in a single charge.
On the whole, the Acer Aspire S3 is a good device to have if you want to buy an ultrabook for under $1000. It has some drawbacks such as the keyboard or the plastic body, but overall it handles OK in normal usage situations.
